Global uncertainties linked to trade conflicts are significant. Moreover, European producers continue to struggle with soaring energy prices, while the ambition to produce “green” steel confronts market players with highly uneven conditions.

Furthermore, it remains unclear whether the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the planned strengthening of European Union safeguard measures in the steel sector will actually be able to significantly improve the situation of the European steel industry.
Against this backdrop, there is hope that Switzerland will not be treated as a third country under EU safeguard measures and that a bilateral solution can be found.

As part of a succession planning arrangement, Brütsch/Rüegger Metals will be taking over 100% of the shares in Walter Looser Ltd. as of 1st July 2023. The Brütsch/Rüegger Metals name represents a full range of long bar semi-finished goods made of steel and other metals for industrial applications, while Walter Looser is the market leader for bronze materials in Switzerland.

This takeover will produce an attractive, forward-looking solution for both businesses; it will secure the on-going development of Walter Looser Ltd.on the one hand, and unlock exciting new prospects for Brütsch/Rüegger Metals Ltd.on the other.

According to Richard Nater, CEO and former owner of Walter Looser Ltd.: “We have enjoyed a successful working partnership with Brütsch/Rüegger Metals for many years already, and I am therefore absolutely certain that we have now found the best possible new owner for Walter Looser Ltd.”.

The steel industry in Europe faces major challenges. Although energy surcharges have decreased since 2023, energy costs will not return to their previous level.

Producers are required to reduce CO2 emissions, which entails immense investment costs. It is also a balancing act in terms of competitiveness with competitors from the Far East. As mentioned at the beginning, the market has calmed down in the spring of 2023. Delivery times have become significantly shorter and Brütsch/Rüegger Metals was able to reduce selling prices for the second time in 2023.

For the summer months, we expect a sideways movement.

The dismantling and conversion work for the major reconstruction of our Hall 5 has begun!

Currently, the conversion work for our Hall 5 is in full swing. In the first step, parts of the old warehouse will be dismantled. Subsequently, two concrete troughs with the dimensions 35 x 9 m and 14 x 4 m and a depth of 4 m will be erected.
The first one will be used for the installation of a KASTO Unitower 3.0, which allows the storage of long goods with a length of up to 12 m in cassettes. In the second, a KASTO long goods storage system Unitop 3.0 with a capacity of 521 cassettes will be installed, in which materials with a length of up to 6.5 m can be stored.

The work will continue until spring 2024.

Now that the situation regarding energy prices has eased somewhat, we are seeing a certain normalization of price trends. The situation has calmed down for commodities in particular, and delivery times have settled at a normal market level. The situation for specialty products is somewhat more varied: In these areas, supply chains are often still not functioning. We have also not yet seen any easing in the pricing of these products. Uncertainties regarding energy price developments and supply chains persist and inhibit suppliers from making significant concessions. Über the further development may be curious …

The situation in Ukraine is having an impact on supply chain, deadline and material prices. 
Some producers of semi-finished steel are currently out of the market due to the uncertain situation regarding the supply of input material and energy prices. This has an impact on supply and prices. We currently offer a very well-stocked range of products with excellent delivery capability. However, it is still advisable to plan for secured requirements in good time. The procurement situation remains tense. Delivery dates for special products of half a year and more are not uncommon. Due to increased energy costs and difficult availability, prices for most products continue to rise. Structural designs are often made from welded tube sections. Here, 3D laser processing offers the unsurpassable advantage of being able to produce absolutely accurate saddle cuts with the minimum of effort and also to professionally chamfer the cut edges for subsequent welding processes - all in one work step!

Offer management

The offer management shows you all open offers. The details of the offer as well as the validity are quickly visible. Valid offers can be ordered directly and a renewal can be requested for expired offers.

Account statement

Are you looking for an invoice or do you need information on your payment conditions and invoice due dates? You can find this information easily and at any time in the account statement.

Already ordered items

The entry to the hit list via the menu item "Already ordered items" lists all products that can be ordered via the Metalshop and that we have already been allowed to deliver for you. Of course, you can refine this search by means of filter attributes for materials / grades and dimensions. When entering via product, material or shape, "history" articles can be listed via a corresponding attribute.

Product comparison and watch list

A new feature in the Metalshop is the product comparison. Up to four comparable articles can be compared with each other in a table to easily identify differences in article characteristics. You can also add items found in the hit list to your watch list and save them for later.

Energy Surcharge

Market supply is still extremely tight. Delivery times are getting longer and longer and prices are rising inexorably. These effects are now compounded by the sharp rise in energy costs, which is prompting producers to levy an energy cost surcharge. The amount of the surcharge depends on the vertical range of manufacture of the semi-finished product and the production location. The surcharge is adjusted monthly by the producers to the current price situation. The factory delivery month will be decisive for the amount of the surcharge. Not all producers have introduced the energy surcharge yet. However, it is very likely that this will be implemented across the board in the short term. We cannot escape this market development and are forced to pass on the corresponding costs. For stock orders, the energy surcharge is integrated into the basic price. In the case of project business with longer delivery times, the energy cost surcharge will be listed on the offer and the order confirmation, provided it is known at an early stage. We regret this development, but assure you that in any case we will only charge the additional costs incurred by us.

The material 1.2210, also called "silver steel", belongs to the cold work and precision round steels. Silver steel is a universally usable cold work steel alloyed with chromium and vanadium, which is characterised by high hardenability and wear resistance as well as good machinability and simple heat treatment.

In addition, the material has a high cutting resistance (resistance to wear of knife edges) as well as a high toughness and is suitable for use in
toughness and is therefore ideally suited for the manufacture of cutting and drilling tools.

These acid-resistant steel tubes are preferably used in pipeline and plant construction for the transport of corrosive media. In the steel sector, there has been a massive price increase since the beginning of 2021. Increased market demand is being met by capacity cuts at the mills due to the pandemic.

In addition, alloying elements have become more expensive and the price of steel scrap has skyrocketed. Due to the supply shortage, delivery times have naturally also become longer.

Expansion of product range: martensitic stainless steel 

New in our stainless assortment 

Round steel 1.4057, hot rolled and drawn/ground

The material 1.4057 is a rust and acid resistant, martensitic stainless steel. The corrosion resistance is only achieved by hardening the parts. In order to futher improve them, the parts must be well polished. Due to its high stability, it is mainly used for machine components that are subject to heavy loads.

Round steel 1.4112, hot-rolled and turned/rough-peeled

The material 1.4.112 is a stainless steel with high hardness, wear resistance and good cutting propertie due to its higher carbon content. This is at the expense of corrosion resistance! Thanks to its mechanical properties, this stainless steel is typically used as well as knife steel. The machinability, however, is very limited.

With the aluminium alloy AW-6026LF Brütsch/Rüegger Metals offers a lead-free alternative to common aluminium alloys. Despite the absence of lead (< 0.05%), the material has good mechanical properties and allows high productivity. AW-6026LF is very suitable for machining on automatic lathes, but can also be used for hot forming.

Opinions and forecasts regarding further developments in the steel sector vary widely. A poorer functioning of international supply chains would rather indicate a shortage of supply and longer delivery times. This would cause prices to rise. However, due to the rather declining propensity to invest worldwide, demand is likely to decline and prices are likely to come under pressure. However, we consider the scope for a price collapse to be very limited, as we are already at a low price level and steel producers will do everything possible to keep prices stable, also out of operational necessity.

We at Brütsch/Rüegger Metals place a high degree of piracy in our day-to-day delivery capability and have prudently planned our stock in advance to avoid supply bottlenecks. The availability and ability to deliver, especially for special products and custom-made items, is very difficult to estimate from today's perspective. In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, we recommend that you make careful and early arrangements in this regard.

Die SIAMS, die Messe für die gesamte Produktionskette der Mikrotechnik, hat alle ihre Aussteller um ihre Meinung gebeten und kündigt hiermit an, dass sie verschoben wird. Die Organisatoren betonen, dass sie von ihren Ausstellern dabei unglaublich gut unterstützt und ermutigt wurden.

Alle Aussteller konnten sich zur Verschiebung des Messetermins äussern und dabei zeichnete sich ein klarer Trend zur November-Alternative ab, wobei die Reaktion der Aussteller aus der Deutschschweiz eindeutiger war. «Geplant ist nun, die SIAMS auf den 10. – 13. November zu verschieben».

Mrs. Petra Poncet started with us on 01.03.2020 as employee in the purchase department.

We extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Poncet and wish her a successful start at Brütsch/Rüegger Metals.

From 02 - 05 March 2021, Switzerland as a business location will be supported by a new leading trade fair. This will take place every two years in March in Bern. The former fairs Prodex, Swisstech and Industrialis will be replaced.

The major associations Swissmem, Swissmechanic and tecnoswiss have signed new agreements for the machine tool industry, machine and tool dealers and suppliers to the MEM industry.

The aim of the merger of the supporting associations is to create an attractive range of trade fairs that will provide an overview of the latest offers and trends.

Mr. Abdullah Mazhar began his apprenticeship as a commercial employee (Profile E) on 19.08.2019.

Our proven final dimension calculator, continues to provide you with valuable services on the new Metalshop. It lists suitable articles from our range of products on the basis of the individual final dimension.

Based on the production standards, a selection of articles will be suggested to you. A novelty compared to the calculator on the old Metalshop is the fact that the suggestions consist of tube and rod material, with the most suitable product being listed at the top.

In addition to our aluminium cylinder tubes and stainless steel piston rods, an advantageous range of stainless steel, aluminium and brass in commercially available qualities is now available to you.

In December 2018 we were able to put our new high-bay warehouse and two automatic saw cells into operation. The layout of the whole system allows an optimal material flow and guarantees a high output.

With the new saw cells, the focus was on a high degree of automation and flexible, efficient processing of all order configurations.

The complete system is supplemented by two conventional automatic saws, a logistics zone with storage stations and a retrieval station with integrated packaging unit.

As an industry pioneer for shop solutions in the steel and metal trade, we are once again setting new standards.

The advanced platform offers numerous new functions such as product finder, extended rotary calculator, article assembly, etc.

Of course, the simple, intuitive operation has been retained.

In addition to just-in-time production, outsourcing is the second major trend that has led to massive change in the manufacturing industry. Historically, outsourcing services have been provided by manufacturing companies. Advantages in this constellation are certainly the competence in the area of manufacturing processes and the favorable cost situation resulting from a high utilization of production facilities. In contrast to the aforementioned variant, Brütsch/Rüegger Metals offers outsourcing based on material competence. For added value, Brütsch/Rüegger Metals relies on a comprehensive network from our existing customer base. As a materials supplier, we are thus also in a position to offer you a wide range of manufacturing technologies.

Brütsch/Rüegger Metals is thus also a competent full-service provider for outsourcing services, rounded off by a practical system for controlling and monitoring (logistics) processes.

Our tool steel stock range introduced in 2015 has been continuously expanded due to strong demand:

Steel prices continue to rise

The extremely strong and sustained demand for steel products has led to massively longer delivery times. In the case of individual special products, delivery times for new purchases are already in 2019. In line with this development, procurement prices have already risen sharply and the mills have announced further price increases. Thanks to prudent material planning, we continue to have a well-stocked inventory.

However, it is advisable to stock up and secure any special products and/or major requirements at an early stage so that there are no unpleasant surprises. Our sales team is at your disposal with words and deeds.

As part of the recertification audit according to the revision of ISO 9001:2015 standards by SQS, our quality management system was checked both for its conformity to the standards and for its functionality. By constantly optimizing our processes, we were able to successfully pass this recertification according to the new standard without any conditions.
